Checking Out

Posted 09/27/2010 at 02:14 PM by superkat

Everyone has been to a hotel for a glorious stay away from home, correct? You check in..you put your things in order and commence fun and eventful activities...grab the day moment by moment...drink in the absolutely fantastic feeling of being away from your normal mundane or hectic life at home...you see new things..new surroundings..you feel alive and well...and then..

You need to check out. Your home life will dictate how you feel about this. You will either be happy for the time you had away and want to go home, or reluctantly turn in your keys and try to keep some smile on your face...some memory that you can hold on to that will get you through the inevitable sorrow you will feel when you return.

And in checking out, you leave a part of yourself in the place you once were. It is only a temporary fix at best.

And that? Is what I am experiencing today. And I don't want to go home. So I look to other horizons...and pray...that I don't completely turn in my keys.

I'm sorry, I can't relate to this article. When we travel we buy the cheapest hotel in the area, then spend our money on doing things in the area. My family an I travel for the culture, and tend to avoid tourist traps. I like it better because it lets you see more of what's really there rather than the gift shop. An example of this was on our recent trip to Fiji. We decided to hire a local taxi rather than go on a tour. We were amazed at how dedicated he was. He told us what every pant, house, and building was. The island is full of water falls, many of which are packed with tourists. The taxi driver was nice enough to take us to the beast water fall on the island, which only locals knew how to get there. He also took us to a local market that had fresh fruit, fresh meat (like got its head cut of two minutes ago)... and kava.

oh, i agree with that. We went to Belize a few years ago...and got a local to show us around. it was amazing. the checking out part is a feeble attempt at what i am experiencing right now. it's a feeling of giving up. at best, if i do, i may be able to redeem some of what i used to be...at worst, i will fail miserably.

I joined a local club called MASC. They have tones of posts on stuff for sale, and it's normally cheap.
