I also ran nitrate up to around 30 while waiting for my denitrator to kick in, but I had a lot of difficulty getting it calibrated this time around. Long story short, as much as I love acros, I think the softies are just easier and cheaper to grow. This saves a bit in GFO and electricity which is nice. I'm in...

First Cycle Complete!

Posted 11/19/2011 at 05:01 PM by Aaarrrggg (Aaarrrggg's 144g Half Circle Dream)

Well after what seemed like endless days of the Nitrite test turning the water purple on contact, it stayed blue today! Hurrah!
It's possible it was actually 0 yesterday, but it had been stubbornly purple for so long that I gave testing a day off. I guess that means the cycle is technically complete (12 days,) however Dr Tim's site says to add more Ammonium Chloride at this point.

I'm all for having even more bacteria, so I dropped in 10ml of Ammonium Chloride. I'll...

Add a Hippo Tang???

Posted 11/14/2011 at 06:48 AM by snorvich (System configuration and fish for my two tanks)

Tangs grow to be a spectacular reef fish; they are hardy, eat well in captivity, don’t bother sessile invertebrates, and rarely quarrels with other reef fish (except, of course, other tangs). Sounds like the perfect addition to your reef aquarium, right? The problem is that Hepatus tangs, which this poster wants to add to a small tank, grow to reach a length of one foot! They are also the fish most susceptible to cryptocaryon irritans.

Some aquarists such as ones on this thread say...

Dr Tim's One and Only

Posted 11/08/2011 at 09:24 PM by Aaarrrggg (Aaarrrggg's 144g Half Circle Dream)

I'm afraid I also become rather impatient...

I'm following Dr Tims Fishless Cycling instructions and dosing Ammonium Chloride up to 3ppm. I added 12oz (180g worth) of One and Only Nitrifying Bacteria on Mon (11/7) and cranked the heaters...
