Fish food adventures...

Posted 01/12/2010 at 09:33 PM by maysorum

Yesterday, I had a culinary adventure and made some fish food. I took a trip to the local Asian market and got some squid, shrimp, sea urchin, and scallops. I looked for fish and lobster roe but it's not in season.

I removed the head, innards, and clear quill from the squid. The ink sac was already removed, thank goodness! Then chopped the squid up in the food processor and dumped it into a large mixing bowl. Next I cleaned the shrimp which was much grosser than the squid—I was not...

Some new photos—yippee!

Posted 01/09/2010 at 08:47 PM by maysorum

The tank has some new creatures as of yesterday... I finally have fish! And I'm kind of in disbelief, the tank is finally mature. I added two different groups: Nemanthias carberryi and Zoramia leptacanthus.

The Anthias are beautiful and seem quite shy, yet emboldened by the Long Spine Cardinals (I also think the Cardinals are emboldened by the Anthias). It's really amazing to see them swimming together, both have such different styles. The Cardinals keep such a tight formation even...

ORA Borealis movie

Posted 01/03/2010 at 09:25 PM by maysorum

Today, I made my first short movie in iMovie. I used continuous shooting mode and my new macro lens (thanks santa!). Take a look:

Also, I've been taking macro pictures of the coral, it's super fun but a bit challenging. I'll make sure to post 'em when I get some nice ones. I'm still trying to figure everything out.

Hmmm, water chemistry and salt mixes

Posted 12/16/2009 at 11:20 AM by maysorum

I've been having a compelling conversation with Randy about my high Magnesium and low Alkalinity issues. Check out the thread for background details: Water parameters and dosing.

In short, I'm using the old bag of salt to make 5 gallons of water. I'll test the parameters and report back. I'm hoping the the salt shows that it is deficient in Magnesium and high in Alkalinity. If so, I'll use this salt...
