Nice rockwork, is the QuietOne 4000 reliable and is it noisy?

polyppetey 06/14/2009 01:29 PM

i have a quiet one 4000 for the filter and a 5000 for the closed loop system.
The 4000 is solid, quiet and reliable, the 5000 has cut out twice in 2 months and about once a day it makes a nice rattling sound for about 5 seconds then runs as usual. customer service for these pumps is non-existant.

any updates on the build. Can yo show more pics of the sump? I have the same tank currently with a HOB ps/fuge and want to do an external sump/fuge.

No real updates to post, the tank has finally settled down and seems to be doing well, I have my first SPS's in green birdsnest, pink and green monti digi, purple monti, pink gonipora and some porite hitchhikers. I have about 12 kinds of zoas, don't know the names sorry. A few leather corals and some LPS. I can take some pics of the sump if you like it is made from a 20 gallon high tank. I split it into 3 compartments. The first holds the return from the tank. I used PVC to split the return into a upside down "T" then have each end of the "T"going into a filter sock. cuts down nicely on the noise doing this. I used 3 pieces of glass to make a bubble trap at this point. The center compartment holds the return pump (quiet one 4000-I think a quiet one 5000 would be a better choice) and heaters. The third division is my refugium. I used a perforated piece of acrylic to make a weir on the top of the glass to filter out the cheato. The fuge is fed by a splitter going from the return line. I control it with a ball valve so I do not have huge flow going through it. If I were to build it again I would have made the fuge bigger maybe 50% of the sump instead of one third.
I will post some picture this week if you like, can't do it today sorry.

Is your tank 30x18x24?

I just trade a rubbermaid tube for one that will be an upgrade for the 40 breeder I had.
Glade you went with a 25g sump...i have an acrylic one and was wondering if it would be big enough.

Very nice tank by the way

Yes it is the 30x18x24, I have a 20g high tank for the sump, fits nicely inside of the stand though you could go bigger with a custom one.

nice build picture updates plz =P

On another side note I got rid of the closed loop and bought 2 1300 GPH Koralia knockoffs from e-bay for 25 dollars, they work great, way better than my closed loop.'
I will post updated pictures in the next day or so.

Thanks petey...those are my exact dimensions also....I will be running a single 400w MH with radium bulbs maybe 2 VHO actinics and a 15g sump fuge 24x10x14.

I have a stand for a 4ft 120 I am thinking about using as it would be nice to have the extra space to keep all the equipment out of view.

I am trying to decide how I want to do the flow in this tank???????

LIke I said I ditched my CL and went with the cheapo koralia knockoffs, I have them situated in the top right corner of the tank, one blowing down the back of the tanks LR and the other blowing across the surface towards the left front and down. It keeps the poo fairly well suspended. Much better then the original plan. To test my flow out I tied a piece of dental floss to a stick and used it to see where the water was going to and made adjustments accordingly, it is an old cylender head porters trick.

I think a bigger stand would be great, just from a storage point of view. I would suggest a bigger sump for you too, 15 g seems kind of small if you want a fuge too. If you have a 4 foot stand maybe a 30 breeder would be a better choice.

Does your tank have a center brace like mine? If so I think the single light would not be a good option.
I'm glad to see there are other people with oddball tanks like mine.

Unfortunately they can be quite aggressive. I recently had to take a Maroon out because he was harassing a Blue Star Leopard, and hounding him around the tank.
