The recall is for real, I work at Petco and we pulled all of ours off the shelfes, even the kits including that heater too.

I got the 250 watt from the 55gallon kit they sold. I brought the heater in a week ago without a receipt to get a refund and they couldn't find a sku for the refund so they just gave me the price of a similar model which was 38 plus tax. Used that money towards a Fluval E 300 and have been pretty happy so far. I like the Fluval's LCD readout.

Dr fosters is telling me the recall is for the heaters from 2010 or newer!
I have 2 of the black stealth pro 300 watt, one is 2 1/2 years old and the other is about 6 years old. They say these are ok....*** ? Any input? Thanks |
My stealth pro was about 3 years old when it blew up last year. Luckily... I guess... I was right next to the tank when it happened and was able to unplug it before I fried the tank and myself. I always turn off the pumps and heaters before I put my hand in the tank now. I'd get rid of them and get something else. Not worth the risk using the old heaters in my opinion.

Just an update from my heaters
had to call marineland they are going to get me a credit! They were really nice, I couldn't believe it. Dr Fosters was a different story... Good luck to everyone else and thanks for this post!!!! |
When I went to petsmart I simply got $35 back in cash even without receipt. It was very easy deal for me.

I run over 70 individual heaters of all marks and makes at my store and I can echo the sentiment that some have expressed here by saying that nearly all heaters on the market for under $100 are crap. They either have terrible electronics or have poor quality control. It is one of the most frustrating stocking problems at my store. If you can find a dusty old Stealth somewhere, grab it up (NOT a stealth Pro!). I removed Ebo Jagers from our shelves after they were bought by Ehiem and re-packaged because of a nearly 50% failure rate (personal experience and customer returns), most of those being stuck in the ON position and cooking fish. That may have changed in recent times, as it seems many people here are recommending them again. I will bring in a couple again for testing. I still have a dozen or so Old Green Ebos, some nearly 15 years old, so I would love to be a fanboy again.
My current recommendation is to plan for failure by getting two under-rated heaters so that the failure of one won't immediately cook or freeze your animals, or even better (especially for reefers with thousands invested in livestock alone) get a controller and titanium probes. |
Tetra sent me a check for replacement cost of the fish/coral I lost. At least they stand behind their products.
