I have completed 2 doses and my 3rd will be today.. Last night I decided to do some GHA pulling/ripping and much to my suprise it was very easy to pull out and off the rocks :-) MUCH easier to pull than before AlgaeFix dosing... It seems to be losing its holding strength already after just 2 doses, and it smells kinda funny.. It still has that awful hair algae smell to it, but it also smells a little like death.. It has also started to turn almost a brownish/green colour :-)
I dont want to jump the gun, but I would say it is working :-) Adam |
Sounds good. ;)
Since it is easy to remove the algae, you will want to get it all out of your tank before the algae brakes down and pollutes your tanks water. |
I would also run GAC and perhaps change it a little more often then you have. Running GFO will help remove phosphate added by dieing or dead algae. Running filter sock is benefitial for collected the algae parts too. A common problem is hobbyists report cyano growth after the algae dies and this can be attributed to the increased waste products from the dead or dieing algae. ;)

I am running a large amount of GAC and GFO all the time, and I also have filter socks on line at all times :-) I did my harvesting last night in anticipation of the die off, and to keep the pollution to a minimum..

It will be interesting to see if you develop cyano problems with implementing these procedures to prevent it. ;) |
I drive truck and I am loaded and heading out for Oklahoma City and then Las Vegas this afternoon, so my girlfriend will be doing the remaining doses while I am gone, much to her dismay :-) I may be out for 12-14 days so I will be anxious to get home and see what things look like :-)

I have a 200 FOWLR tank that was covered with hair algae. I had my nitrate and phosphate levels at zero with API tests. I started the AF about the middle of June. I have gotten lax over the last couple weeks with the 3 day treatments but the algae is almost gone. The first thing I noticed was the glass being cleaner, very good deal, and the HA was much easier to remove from the rock and much slower to return. I also have mexican grazer snails working on the rock and they did help but were not able to get rid of all of the HA by themselves. At this point you have to look for it to see any algae in the tank. I am still dosing but usually miss the 3 day period. I do plan on doing weekly or bi-weekly treatments to make sure it stays gone. I am really glad I found this thread and was able to get my tank back.

Texas thanks for the post. :)
It's always encouraging to hear good results when using AF & especially if no negative effects on tank organisms occur. |
I am going to clean my rocks by brushing with a toothbrush in a seperate tub this sunday. Hopefully it is okay.

Haven't read through all the pages... too many to go through... but there was reference to if anyone had adverse affects to post as well. Algaefix does work. I tried it on my 15g frag tank and saw how well it was working and decided to try it in my 35g SPS. I had a odd bubble algae that came in on rock from an LFS that was impossible to get rid of and it started dieing with the Algaefix treatment. However, it also affected all my Acros. With 4 tanks it pretty well narrowed it down to the Algaefix since I only dosed those two tanks. I incurred losses... however I saw what was happening and was able to get a few frags of each coral, but I lost the main colonies. The montiporas were fine, all LPS were fine, pavona, porites and turbinaria unaffected. I lost both cleaner shrimp and one peppermint shrimp and my favorite emerald crab. I moved all the acro frags to my 60g soft coral tank and the've recovered well with only 2 more losses. Right after the treatment I incurred a really bad case of red cyano in the 35g which is just now going away (been about 2-3 weeks I guess). The bubble algae that tries to come back ends up dieing so the Algaefix must still be having an affect. The 15g frag tank is empty except for a Royal gramma and 2 peppermints and one small porites frag. No cyano but seems like some dinoflagellate are starting to creep up.

Okay thanks. Just for the info: I will be changing my hood and increasing light next week, mine is aroun 50 watts, i wil try to make it 120 watts.

Just gave the 3rd dose of Algaefix freshwater on my marine tank.:)
I am going to clean my rocks by brushing with a toothbrush in a seperate tub this sunday. Hopefully it is okay. Should i clean the rocks or wait for more doses. Plz reply. My house is getting painted. Are there any precautions to be taken??? |

Cleaning your rock is benefitial from the very start when dosing AF.
|
Mine is a fowlr tank, no corals. Okay so i will clean it today, thanks a lot.
|
Your welcome. :)
|
I cleaned my live rocks. They look fresh now:). Should i keep dosing Algaefix or wait till i see increase in hair algae.
|
How many does have you completed?
|
Hi Cliff,
Can you please tell me if Algaefix works against Dictyota? Thanks |
There have been hobbyists who have claimed control of dictyota using AF. Others have claimed it did not control their dictyota. It could be an identifiying issue or perhaps a species issue. :(
One common problem is properly identifying your algae. Dictyota sp (perhaps it is dictyota acutiloba as claimed): http://www.marinelifephotography.com...cutiloba-3.jpg |

Personally, I would go to 6 doses and then stop. If the alge returns, I would begin at the every three day dosing schedule again. ;)
|
Okay i will be dosing 6 doses, then i will stop if everything looks fine. Tmrw i am going to add 2 baby clowns in my tank. Hope they are not affected by Algaefix & Vodka dosing.

We haven't had any reports so far of loosing fish.
One of the biggest factors of newly purchased fish deaths is from ammonia poisoning in transport. If you can place the fish on hold for 3 -7 days, this will help see if they have problems. Heavy breathing is not good. ;) |
Thanks.
