How long have you been dosing it?

Johnic 09/29/2013 07:44 PM

I've been dosing like this for over two months on my previous tank to keep algae down. I'm now doing it on new 75

Good to know.

I'm getting ready to do my fourth dose tomorrow but everything is already dead or so far gone that it isn't even worth mentioning. This stuff rocks!

Decadence 10/08/2013 10:29 PM

Dose six is tomorrow. I will probably be switching to a maintenance dose after this one because all of the ghost algae is gone.

somewhere in this thread they recommend not using it as a maintenance dose as it is a pesticide which the algae in your tank could build up a resilience to.

I'll have to look more into this. I would think that any algae which survives the initial treatment would already have built up a tolerance to it. :hmm5:

Hello,
I just wanted to give my recent success using API AlgaeFix. I was hesitant to use this product because of some kinda bad reviews on Amazon but after reading a lot of this thread I decided to give it a shot. I have been battling high nitrates and phosphates for a while but now have them under control too. I do not have much in the way of coral so I was not too worried about the affects. I did the recommended dosage that is on the bottle and a total of 5 doses. I have done two water changes in this time. At that point the HA sucked right up. There is still a little bit in there but it is almost gone! :bounce1: I am going to keep up the dosages until it is all gone.

This is my first attempt at posting pictures so we will see how this goes. Posting before and after pics.
First two pics are before and the last two are after pics. Sorry for the bad quality. Taken with my phone.

10 months free of HA - but now here comes the red brush algae

I posted a while back, but thought it might be of value to share how a weekly maintenance dose has kept my system HA free for close to a year.

From December 2012

From October 2013
http://i1227.photobucket.com/albums/...psd7fb9cef.jpg

I've been doing a weekly maintenance dose of around 5ml for a total water volume of around 70 gallons after the initial dose every 3 days for a month. I've seen a couple of posts about comments on algae building up a tolerance. I haven't seen anything that would support this IME. I also have not seen any cyano, as mentioned by others on this thread.

In conjunction with weekly vacuuming of the sump, and a 5% water change, GFO and good skimming, my parameters are steady and HA seems to be dormant.

My new challenge is red brush algae, which seems to be growing in more and more in areas of strong lighting. Anyone have any recommendations on how to clear this out? Today, I took a piece of rock out and "painted" the algae with some peroxide to see if this will kill it...

Decadence 11/02/2013 05:28 PM

After a successful full treatment, I have gotten a large bottle of algae fix and hooked it up to a BRS doser. It doses 9.9ml every Sunday night/Monday morning at 3AM, a couple hours after the lights have turned off. So far with my maintenance dosage, no algae has come back. I have even taken my GFO reactor off-line so that I can start hunting for color and I still only wipe my glass once a week due to an extremely slight haze.

That looks like great results to me! :)

Just adding my findings on this product as well. At dose 6, all of my Dictyota that I was battling went away. I did not have any bad side affects other than sad snails going without much food for a few weeks.

clams? and AF

Cliff,

I apologize if this has been mentioned already in this 60 page thread. I have an enormous Tridachna Gigas that of course has symbiont algae. I am fearful if I tied AF that it may harm the clam... thoughts?

bertoni 12/05/2013 03:15 PM

I don't think anyone has reported problems with clams and AlgaeFix, but I might be wrong.

Psionicdragon 12/09/2013 03:07 AM

have anyone noticed any adverse effects on anemones? I noticed that after I dosed the rec amount, my gigs started to shrink and deflat. Not sure if it is pooping or if it was the algaefix.

Psionicdragon 12/11/2013 07:41 PM

nm found my answer..it sickens it.

I have heard of anemones being affected before but tons of people have reported success with anemones as well. In all honesty, I have seen people report problems with just about everything. The instances are rare and possibly due to misuse or other factors.

is it ok to be used with bio pellets ?

dlai531 12/28/2013 11:40 AM

Will this stuff kill green bubble algae?

Reeferz412 12/28/2013 02:12 PM

In response to my previous statement. It turns out some rocks I picked out from the keys had phosphates locked inside. To this day one rock always has a tuft or two that gets gobbled up by my blenny or turbo snails.

bertoni 12/28/2013 05:17 PM

AlgaeFix should be safe to use with bio-pellets. I don't know whether it'll kill bubble algae.

dlai531 12/30/2013 01:36 AM

Just started my first dose today. Guess I'll find out whether it works on bubble algae

colesreef 12/30/2013 08:20 AM

after fighting hair algae for about 8 months and using chem elite that dropped phosphates to .01, which seemed to help a little, i decided to give algaefix a try.
following directions, by the 3rd treatment at 3 days apart, im happy to report that algaefix does indeed work. i am now on the maintenence dose. ihave fish, corals, snails, crabs and a sea star that came thru with no ill effects.
I have tried turbos, astrae snails emerald crabs, sea hairs and crispata nudis
and nothing natural worked so I say Hooray for Algaefix.
