Heat issues with a Panworld or is it just my set-up?
I have reset a 120 using a Panworld 100PX-X as a return. It has been running for 5 days now without lights and open topped for this time. I have both a sticky thermometer (the kind that stick to the outside of the glass) and a floating bulb thermometer in the tank. The sticky thermo does not show a reading (it maxes at 82) and the bulb read 84 this morning.
I had previously used a Mag 9.5 for the return (plumbed external) and the tank always ran at 78. The only change is the Panworld. Has anyone else experienced this or do you think I have a faulty pump? The pump is warm to the touch, but not so warm that I cannot grab hold of it. The stand is acrylic and as such is fully enclosed on all 4 sides (except for the front door and 2 x 2" holes in the back for power cords). It is noticably warmer in the stand than in the room the tank is in. Will adding a clip-on fan in the stand to blow air around be of any help? I also have a canopy for the tank that houses 440 watts of VHO lighting with a single 3" Icecap fane fit into the back. Will adding an additional fan or 2 in the canopy help? Thanks in advance for any help on this. |
I had a PanX on a closed loop and it added about 5 degrees to the system. It has ended up being a hot potato in our local reefing community.

I have the same pump you do on a 120. Without the lights on my tank runs 1 degree warmer than the ambient air.
No heat problems with this pump... Noise...that's another issue. I live in Chicago also. Could it be the warm weather this week that is causing you a problem? |
I doubt its the pump. You went from a 90w water cooled pump to a 130w air cooled pump. If anything, i'd expect a drop in temperature.

I have two Pan World Pumps. Don't rmember the corresponding model numbers but they are a about 1100 GPH model and about 800 GPH models, both pressure rated. The larger one is warm to the touch and the smaller is just barely warm. These replaced Little Giant pumps and my chiller run time dropped close to 10 minutes with the pump swap. These pumps should not heat the water up by all that much. Mine are pretty quiet too. The smaller one is very quiet.

Sorry for not updating this -
Turned out to be a mis-calibrated heater. Heater was set for 78 degrees but was running at 84. I made the necessary adjustment and now the tank runs a steady 80 with all lights and canopy on (with fans running in canopy). Thanks all. |
