HOB go in sump?
 

I have a 55 gallon setup. Want some zoas maybe and rics, no hard corals. I have a couple of perculas and want to get a couple of more fish, maybe a wrasse, goby, some shrimp. I have a 15 gallon which will be my sump with a Lifereef prefilter/skimmer. About 35 lbs. live rock so far and will be getting some more to put in the sump.

I have a HOB Deltec 300. It can fit in the sump, I believe (as the pump operating it is inside the skimmer) but I wonder if an in-sump skimmer would be better?

I have a HOB I am planning on hanging on the back of my sump. Good option until ready to drop crazy money. Heck, if it worked good on the back of the display, why not the sump?

I was looking to put it inside the sump instead of hanging on the back.

I had a Remora HOT skimmer hanging on my sump tank. I believe that the lower water level in the sump hurt its performance. The pump must use more energy to pump water, which leaves less energy for foam generation.

I should have tried placing the Remora inside the sump but instead tried to raise the water level with limited success. To limit the salt spray, I used an acrylic cover with cutouts for the skimmer outlet and pump. Another alternative would have been to install a larger pump or to lower the return flow.

It depends on the skimmer.

Many can be put in a sump with no problems.
