Can freshwater ich effect a saltwater?
I am 28 days deep into my new 90 gallon reef build and I just ordered the JBJ Auto Top Off and I will be using a 10 gallon glass tank for the reserve RO fresh water. The 10 gallon tank that I'm using was used to hold a goldfish and the fish ended up getting ich and died (The tank was given to me). Just as a pre-caution I soaked and scrubbed the tank in diluted bleach today and will soak the tank with PRIME (de-clorinator) after it completely dries.
My question is: can freshwater ich effect saltwater fish/tank? (did I overdue it with bleach?) |
No, you are fine. Rinse the tank out well before you use it.

Let the tank sit with prime for a day or two. If your tank still smells like bleach do it again. I would recommed overdosing a little with prime just to be on thd safe side. Once your done give it one last rinse and your good.
Someone correct me if im wrong but i believe marine ich and saltwater ich are two separate species. In that case you should have nothing to worry about. |
Bleach evaporates so if you let the tank air out completely, the bleach will be gone. Even if you had not cleaned it so well, the freshwater Ich wouldn't survive in saltwater. As mentioned above, they are two different parasites.

As others said bleach will evaporate in no time. |
You can actually treat FW ich by raising the salinity and temp of the aquarium, so I'm sure there is no way it is going to survive the conditions in a SW aquarium.
As others have said treat the tank with Prime or just let it air out for a couple of days and you are fine. |
Thanks everyone! Good thing they're different! I will definitely treat with Prime and my ATO system should be here Monday :)
