You shouldn't have any problem using the canister filters. They would in fact be rather ideal for what you mention. As with all of your equipment clean them every few months or so and you'll be fine.

I have two mag 12's. They're noisy. But I use them for mixing the salt and they're in my basement so I don't know how bad they would be if they were in the living space. I wouldn't be able to stand it but I'm rather OCD about any noise from the cabinet. Some folks use them and accept the noise as part of the deal. And you should run them submerged to keep them cool. Which means they add heat to the water.
