Even DNA, considered indisputable in almost all applications, is not 100% certainty. We execute people when proof is shown "beyond a reasonable doubt". Proving no forms of ich existed in a tank would be like proving that no North Korean submarines were prowling the Great Lakes. Neither can be done to a 100% certainty ; but both can be proven "beyond a reasonable doubt". I think an established tank that has shown no signs of ich (assuming the tank is owned by someone who routinely examines his fish) for a certain amount of time can be considered proof beyond a reasonable doubt that ich is not in the tank. May there be an exception? Sure, but extremely unlikely.

would you prefer 'proof by way of scientific method' ?
'proof' in a judicial sense has nothing to do w/ scientific proof (and your contention that such a thing doesn't exist is just plain silly).
i can prove scientifically (using the rules and practices of scientific method, which certainly DOES exist) how and why the moon revolves around the earth. are you claiming that can't be done?
and yet again-you all seem to not be able to separate an observable infection from one that's simply not able to be seen w/ the 'naked eye'. no one has the observational skills to look at a fish unaided and say 'this fish DOESN'T have a subclinical infection'.
i would challenge anyone who thinks their tank is ich free, to drop the temp in their system by 5-7 degrees over 6 hrs. or so (won't hurt your fish, inverts, or corals), then bring it back up.
then we'll see how many of these systems are 'ich free'
