So you've got an over the back of the tank overflow rather than a traditional or drilled one? I have the same thing- had to step down to the 480gph version and use penductors to get the flow I wanted. Might want to try flexible pvc or a different overflow design. There may not be any getting around it although sometimes it does help to umplug the pump for a few seconds a couple times to try and get the air out that may be in there. You can also try a bio ball in the pvc line to break the little vortex that is causing the cavitation.
