Nitrate Removal (Reactor?)

So a couple of questions regarding the best non water change way to get rid of nitrates. I have a large area of my sump open for some kind of filtration right now (55 gallon tank, about a 2'x1ftx(10-14 in) section open).

Plan 1: (Original plan/Current plan) put in a biopure brick and allow chaeto to grow. The bricks in there growing algae on it and I have a very very very small power head submerged to rotate water in that area. I think I got the chaeto to grow but I just stumbled on what might be a better option.

Plan 2: Nitrate reactor, I was thinking about doing a DIY one but wasn't sure. I saw one online where he pushed water in at 30 gph and it went through the seachem media which is currently under my skimmer as well right now.

Can I accomplish the same thing in the space provided without the jar? Should I just fill that area with seachem DeNitrate or is there something special about the confined space of a jar?

Do you all have other suggestions on a better use of that area?

Im a Fowlr with zoas and shrooms. To make a dent in my nitrates i cant do a single 5 gallon swap out. A 50% change is like 100 gallons and thats tough to prep for since the salt mix has to sit for 2 days.
