new to tank

I lost a Picasso trigger about a month ago, when I turned on the lights the other day there were about 2 dozen very small shells(crabs of some sort) on top of the coral. The shells were long in shape and a light gray in color and only about a 16th of an inch. It seemed that when I turned on the lights they seemed to go away. I was able to take one out of the tank and it was a hard shell. Any ideas what they are? Thanks, Mike
