Chem-Marin Stop Hair Algae

I ran across this on the internet. Has anyone ever used this stuff and if so, is it any good?

I bought some on a whim. It didn't do anything for me, but I've learned a bit about hair algae since then, as in...there are different types of it. I think mine is derbasia, as opposed to briopsis. I'm not positive, but I think so, and perhaps this stuff works on one kind but not the kind I have.

Or...it may just be garbage

I was thinking it was probably garbage.

My problem is I don't know how to get rid of my hair algae. I don't want a yellow tang and I can't add a cherub angel because I already have a Coral Beauty and Potter's Angel in my tank. I have snails and crabs in there but I went to my LFS the other night and bought more crabs and some turbo snails but they're not eating on it either. I can't take the rock out of the tank because it is on the bottom and it is supporting a lot of other rocks and now the algae is showing up on other rocks. It won't take long before it takes over my whole tank!! If you can't tell I'm VERY FRUSTRATED.

Anyone have any other ideas?

Garbage..... My battle consisted of changing out all the media in my RO/DI. Going BB and scrubbing the rock and syphoning out the HA at the same time. Coupled with nice wet skim I finally started to win the battle. It was a long one.

Rowaphos worked for me. It will remove phosphates which are feeding the HA andstarve it out (it took about 3 months for me), but you should identify the source of the phosphates and eliminate them to totally cure your problem.

Thanks! I'm probably overfeeding as I have a bad habit of that. I just like to make sure everyone gets enough food.

i have had hair algea a number of times, in fact some is springing up right now. My experience is that its all about water quality. In the past, a number of water changes and a reduction in Nitrates has done the job for me. Do you have a refugium running ? If you do, then trim back the algea in the refugium, do some water changes and make the hair algea compete with the Marcro Algea.... it should loose the battle and your tank cn be freeof hair algea in a matter of weeks.

No, I don't have a refugium running but have been thinking about starting one.

I also had a major Green Hair Alge outbreak that I just couldnt seem to rid my tank of. I bought a lettuce Nudibranch at the LFS one day and what do you know he devoured every last bit of hair alge my tank is now completly spotless. THe nudibranch is the best critter I ever bought.

I actually had 2 of those and they never touched the stuff. They ended up breaking up into little pieces and dying.
