Best skimmer for a 120

I am starting to plan a 120 and was wondering what YOUR opinions are on the best skimmer for UNDER the stand on a 120.

Thanx guys,

I am still planning this so a insump or out of sump skimmer will work, i can work around either or!

Thanx chris

Also what out of sump return pump will pump alot of water and be quiet?

The tank will be jam packed with sps if everything goes right!

I concur, also get an Eheim 1262 for your return pump.

i use a Euro reef rs135 on my 90.. i would get somethin bigger like the rs180 or whatever it is for a 120.. very high quality.. easy to set up.. little to none maintence, and pretty quiet. the price is not that bad either compared to other brand names..

if your wanting to go cheaper but stil have good quality.. i would look at the octopus nw200 or somethin like that maybe bigger. or a ASMg4 plus or whatever its called.

The bubble masters seem to be great skimmers, but a 250 model may be a bit overkill for a 120!!! People are putting these on 300 gallon systems!!!

If your looking at the bubble masters, I would go no bigger than the 200, but the 150 would would be fine too.

My advice would be to match a skimmer to your tank size. Maybe go a little bigger, but not too huge. Most of the larger bodied skimmers require a high level of DOC's to maintain a constant foam head. If you get a skimmer thats way too big, chances are it won't even be skimming most of the time.

IMO, its great to overskim, but IME this can be acheived w/out buying a huge skimmer. Just one thats a little bigger than your system requires.

HTH and Happy New Year!!

Jim

Go with the ASM 3 or 4, they are decent skimmers, reasonably priced, have a fairly small footprint, so you have more room for a fuge, but check on heigth of any skimmer you buy, as it may be too tall for your stand, unless you plumb it outside the stand, then the world is your oyster!
I have a mag 7 on my return, I have a 125g FOWLR, may not be enough turnover for your corals....HTH!

thanx guys,

My stand is 36" tall, so i shouldnt be to worried about the hieght of the skimmer!

I looked at bubble master but for the prices, im sure there are better out there.

Asm was something that i was thiking about, would the 3 work or am i better going with the 4x

Euroreef are always good skimmers, i was jsut seeing if anything has dominated them yet sicne i havnt had one for a year or so.

Thanx guys,

I am going to do some more looking

I have one on my 120 and it does a great job!

Craftmanship is unmatched and you can breakdown and clean the entire thing in 20 minutes easy.

Have you checked out the Aqua C EV-180?

Bubble King and Deltec supposedly make good products, but the prices have always been insane. EuroReef is another common winner, but it is an in-sump only model, and doesn't have an overflow for the skimmate. For these reasons I went with an AquaC. Price was reasonable (relatively speaking), it could be used in sump or out of sump, and it has an overflow for the skimmate.

I empty my skimmate every three months or so, and love the fact that I don't have to do it more often.

I have a ER 8-2 which I believe is comparable to the RS135 and love mine.

I don't think there is a "best" skimmer, but a what are you happy with on your 120g.

yea i think i questioned it wrong, i want the most reasonable yet powerful skimmer for a 120 not the "best", becasue i am sure that a 4 ft out of sump skimmer would be somewhat the best!

Back to more reading for me

I put an H&S 150 in the sump of my 120G. It's my first decent skimmer and I'm happy with it.

IMO, it is tough to get objective response for this sort of question as people who have used skimmer from all major brands are rare, though I am sure they exist.
