curing live rock

I bought 30 lbs of lalo uncured from liveaquaria - i have it in a big rubbermaid 80degrees with powerhead. it has been curing for 5 days - I have done 4 water changes and scrubbed the rock with this cleaning liquid / brush i found at the LFS. the rock smelled pretty bad when i first got it - but after 4 changes / 4 scrubdowns it smells good (relatively speaking) and looks great, and the water its in has tested good... you think i can put it in tank now? all i have in current tank is shrimp / hermits / snails.

I would probably wait another couple days and retest before adding it just to make sure you don't start another cycle.

Did you test the water params all along? If so do you recall what the past test numbers were? Just curious.

I should have tested when i first started curing - but of course i didnt test until the last time i did water change. i will give 2 more days like you said... until the one week mark - since that is the recommended minimum timeframe. Thank you.

as long as your ammonia levels are at zero and nitrates are starting to build up in the curing water then it should be o.k. to put the rock in with just snails, crab, and shrimp.

if you cant smell the rotten smell anymore it's probably real close to ready.

some carbon and skimming would probably help speed up things as well.

I would give it at least a week, better to give it at least 2 weeks. Let it go to 7 days, don't change the water and see what your params are at.

We just received 30 lbs from DFS and have had it cycling a few days. The rock it's self is beautiful with coraline algea in bright oranges, pinks, and greens. The other thing that was a surprise: the rock is super porus. We removed about 5 gals from our 24 AP, and after putting all the rock in, was able to put 95% of the water back in. We are really excited to see how the rock turns out after the cycling.

I don't think you will be dissapointed! Good Luck!
