Return Pump and Feeding

Folks,

Curious how many of you turn off your return pump to feed your fish and corals? Is it safe to turn the pump off each day for 15-30 minutes to feed? I've noticed that with the pump on, most of the food gets sucked into the return very quickly...

My sump is in the basement, and was thinking about putting an X10 module on it to control it from upstairs where my tank is.

Good idea, or will I wreck my pump?

Thanks,
L3

I turn mine off every day when I feed for 15-30 minutes. I've had it off for an hour many times with no ill effects. It never made sense to me either to let food go into the overflow and sump and rot there.

I use a mechanical, in-wall, intermatic timer to turn my pump off. Turn the dial and forget about it. It will turn the pump back on for me. One less thing to worry about, "Did I turn the pump back on???"

If you want to do this make sure you get a timer that has "Reverse Action" contacts.

I turn off for about 30 minutes, when I feed Phyto or Zoo I leave the return off for several hours to give the filter feeders a fair chance
