It really does look like a crown of thorns sea star.....
They're trying to erradicate those things because they're destroying the reefs.

It's a Crown of Thorns. Acanthaster planci. It is possible to get these guys on LR, where is your LR from? Careful, they have poisonous spines, and if you value your corals, you'd remove it. (I'd keep it, but it's just me)

In a way, the fact that this was found on some live rock worries me. Don't need it to start proliferating within the hobby!

Before everyone starts hating on these things, please consider that the verdictis still out as to wether or not these things are truly destroying the reef.
True they eat corals. But the issue that has not been established yet is whether or not they have been established at their present density in the wild for a long time, and we are just now noticing that they are there in the numbers we are seeing? Or is it that the population is on the upswing and they truly are destroying the reefs? I do not believe that there is enough data to present a decent argument that these creatures' population is exploding and the reefs are all in danger. Just get a little bothered when the community decides to eradicate anything in the wild. |

There was a very interesting show about this on the Science Channel, I believe. Most the the questions you mentioned have been answered pretty thoroughly.

This is not true there is plenty of data on it. A few years back there was an article is American Scientist. Two of the the biggest reasons was the reduction of Giant Triton mollusks population, which feds on them, due to human collecting of this mollusks for mantle-top souvenirs. Second, when the reef devastation started many local fisherman, to protect the reef, went out an collected these star fish. Little did they know, at the time, that cutting them up into many pieces and throwing them back into the ocean, greatly increased their population density, due to regeneration of the severed body parts. Allot of this took place in the 80's Here is some more info on reasons for destruction. http://www.aims.gov.au/pages/about/c...nt-triton.html |

I thought it was interesting how they had special diver teams going out to inject poison into the stars. It'd be like finding a needle in a haystack for me!

Actually the show was very balanced. Did you see it? It simply stated various findings/possibilities, along with various sides of the political/ecological debate.
