Live sand as filtration?

Sorry, another newb question, We are planning a 29g will a powerhead, live sand and live rock act as a suffiecent filter? I have read about skimmers, but not sure if I would need one?

Can you use fake rock, fake/plastic decoration and use some other type of filter?

LS or LR is helpful in the denitrification process among other benefits.
Skimmers pull out proteins/waste.
Some people go skimmerless, but IMO I wouldn't be w/out one.
Plastic rock or decorations are pretty much just for asthetics and don't add anything to your filtration.

Your tank will benefit exponentially from using live rock and sand. 1-2lb/gallon of live rock, a fine aragonite sandbed, and a skimmer is all you need for filtration. If you are adventurous you could buy an Aquaclear filter and mod it into a hang-on fuge. Here's a link.

if your doing a 29g i would be very careful about adding fish. slowly and wait until the tank is cycled .
i think i killed more fish in my 29 gallon than any other tank ive owned. simply because i added fish to quickly and too many

Definitely test often and go slowly. Mistakes in a 29g are faster and bigger than the same mistake in a 100g. Re your question, knowing what I know today, I'd get a skimmer. A remora hang-on would do very well for you. Best of all worlds, a 50g reef-ready with a sump and skimmer, but I've seen very nice tanks done with just a remora, live rock, and a very, very, VERY light fish load. Do more corals than fish in the 29g---keep your fish to what, at adult size, would fill about 1/4 measuring cup if squished---and you'll do fine. Blennies and gobies are a very good choice for that size, ditto dartfish like firefish.
