freshwater dip for new fish?

I have a clown tang i just got and noticed when i got it home it has a little bit of ick, I was wondering if I could acclimate it first, and then do a freshwater dip. will the dip put to much stress on it? And would 30 sec or so be alright? I studied this fish in the store and I didnt see anything wrong, but I guess I missed it.

I wouldn't. Tangs are known for ich problems but I would still be careful.

Suggest you put it in your QT and put a cleaner shrimp in with him. That should take care of it within a couple of weeks.

I wouldn't expose the rest of my tank to it if you can avoid it. Take it back to thw LFS if no QT tank.

Clown tangs are a tricky fish and in general are ich magnets. I had one for 2 years many years ago that lived out his life in a quarantine tank after many failed attempts of adding him to a display tank. No matter what he'd come down with ich, even when all the current fish showed no signs of parasites and other new additions never developed parasites. For this reason and others related to feeding habits they're by far the most difficult tang to keep and have a very poor survivability rate in marine aquaria.

The freshwater dip won't do much besides stress the fish out further. Put him in quarantine with copper and watch him closely and I'd suggest a longer quarantine period than usual. Also, feed him as often as possible with vitamin enriched greens to help boost up his immune system.

FW dips are not a cure for Ich - while they may remove the spots on the outside, the fish is still infected.

And likely quite stressed, which isn't what I'd want to do to a sick fish.

A far better idea would be QT, where at least you can isolate it while you treat [and not spread throughout the tank].

Thanks for the help, just thought I would ask before doing, I"ll put him in qt for A while and see what happens.

I think I am goin to put him in qt and treat with garlic for a while and see what happens.
