What the heck was that?

I went up to my tank and shined a flashlight on a piece of my live rock, and some long pink tentacle retracted back in to the rock. It was at least an inch and a half sticking out of the rock.

Scared the crap out of me...

It has no hair. It looked actually like a tube and it was smooth, solid pink with no other coloration. The part sticking out of the rock was about 1.5 inches long.

Hmmm... At first I thought maybe a bristleworm. Got me, have you checked out Melvs reef for an ID?

http://www.melevsreef.com/

Hopefully you can find the critter there.

Yes, I looked and couldn't find anything there.

As soon as the light was in it, it hid really fast. I wonder if getting a picture will even be possible.

Hmm... Hopefully someone will chime in with a good ID. I'm stumped at what it could be. Maybe just very tired and getting sick, but no idea.

Could it be a Peanut Worm? I'm sure they are only brown though.

It was a lot thinner than pics I'm seeing of peanut worms, it didn't bulge out like that. I haven't seen it again, even after keeping the lights on and checking multiple times, so it's going to be extremely hard to get a pic.

i forget the name of the worm, (eunicid maybe?) but there is one that retracts SUPER fast when it detects motion or light. I think I read about them in a Dr. Ron Shimek article, but it's been a long time. Try image searching eunicid worm.

I Have both Eunicid and Peanut.. and also ( FIRE/BRISTLE ) worms all of them retract pretty fast once light hits them... you go do the RED LIGHT viewing... they don't really see red light... I use that a lot during my night viewing when the lights are off... you get to view if you have predators roaming your tank when the lights are out...

It looks exactly like the Vermetid gastropod on this page:

http://www.reefs.org/hhfaq/pages/mai.../faq_rock3.htm

Anyone have any more info on these?

They are totally fine. Filter feeders that tend to breed prolifically. No worries.
