Maxi jet powerhead

Hi everyone,

I am about to buy a Aquafuge hangon and I need some advice on which Maxi jet I would need to replace the crappy Rio that comes with this fuge. This is the medium sized fuge and it will be for my 55 gal. Should I get the Maxi jet 600 or 900? How much flow do I need for my chaeto ? Thanks!

Gary

From what I've read, people give flow to cheato so it simply doesn't stay in one position which causes one side to not get equal lighting. I doubt it needs flow in the sense that coral, etc do.

The aquafuge designs are specified so that you get a specific LPM coming into the fuge so that it gives what ever Macro Algae you put there to give it time to take up the nutrients away from the water that going through it at a designed LPM through the fuge.

adding a larger PH which its not designed for IE' 900 or 1200 maxi will probly defeate the purpose of giving the water coming into the fuge enough contact time with the macro algae for nutrient scrubbing....

you could also add a tiny power head in the fuge to help move water around to destroy any stagnant flow areas which may help in reducing chances of slime/film algae from getting a foothold.

As for mine I have a Large aqua fuge PS which comes with a maxi 1200. The Protein skimmer I will no longer be using as it is not that great for skimming duties but good for keeping macro... my deltec mce600 will be taking care of the skimming duties from now on...

I'd just leave the rio in there, it may be crappy when compared with other pumps, but if it's working, let it. Will do the job just fine for the HOB fuge.
