cloudy water
I think I made a drastic mistake. I added 10 lbs of CaribSea aragonite. The bag states Ready to use with minimal rinsing. So I rinsed it minamally and added it slowly. Now I cannot see into my fish tank. The only filtration that seems to be taking it out is the skimmer. I added a filter on a mag 7 pump, but Im thinking that is too powerful to collect the silty material.
Any suggestions besides a huge water change? Thanks in advance |

do you have a filter sock? or pads either 50-100 micron?
a friends tank was like that but he added a 50 micron pad from the return output to his sump. that cleared fast but had to changed 6-8 pads

good question. I just saw that the other day on a thread.
you can try it and see. another option is going to a fabric store or walmart and buy a yard of felt fabric. $2/yard I think and can be made or cut into a filter pad/sock

I think your best off just running your skimmer wet, what skimmer do you have? Is this in your 58gal?

you need good flow in your tank to cycle all the water and have them go to your return output with the filters mentioned. how much gph are your return pump? I don't know if coffee filters would last compare to the ones I mentioned.

So I tried a few coffee filters, but they just fill up too quickly. Im running about 800gph through the tank. It settled out quite a bit overnight. I think Im going to buy a fine filter sock today.
I have a H&S F2000 or something like that, It's an awesome in sump filter. The good news is that the water is clear enough now for me to see all of my fish and coral, everyone is open and looking good. It just looks like my tank had a nice snow fall just like the few inches outside.

i would blow the silt off the rock and corals. If your worried about stiring it up again you could syphon it off and then replace the water.

I used Carib Sea Aragonite live also when setting up my mother-in-laws tank. It is a 40 gal. and has an aquaclear 300 on it as there is no sump. It cleared in a matter of hours. If you poured too quickly or too far from the bottom it may be cloudy a little longer. It will settle down. I didnt think you should rinse it because it is supposed to be live stuff in it. I didnt rinse mine and all is well. Tina

So I went to the LFS today. I could only find 100 micron felt for a filter. I bought the large 30X18", Doubled it and sewed it into a double layer 100 micron sock filter. So far its been running about 1/2 hr and its working wonders. I can almost see the back glass now.

thanks evisike, I figure th 100 micron will become a 50-25-10 micron filter as it clogs up. and its about 15" long, this will take a while to fill up
