Can This Skimmer.....

Can this skimmer run out of a sump with only tubing supplying flow? I have this and I need to start skimming my LR curing container.

Some people have external skimmers like that hooked up to their over-flow so the skimmer gets water directly from the tank (gravity fed), is that what you mean? Otherwise all you need to do is use a small pump to pump water in to the skimmer (I think they recommend 1-1.5 times the total water volume).

I don't have any small pumps for that. It comes with a pump. Will that work?

It comes with a pump other then the re-circ. one? If so thats probably why it came with one, that is for a feed pump. Otherwise you can buy a MJ or some other small pump. A mj600 is only $15 on Marine Depot.

How far away are you talking about putting the skimmer

the further away, the more hose, the more hose the more friction and preasure loss

Nevermind. I found that I won't need it. I'll be setting it up in my sump when I start my tank.

The H&S A110 skimmer in the link is pictured with a recirculating pump which is used to mix air with water to produce foam.

You will need to plumb the overflow to it or purchase an additional feed pump to pump water from your sump into it.

Recirculating skimmers can be fed by one of two ways:

1. small powerhead like mj600 that was recommended earlier, i personally like the eheim compact 600

OR

2. gravity feed the tank's raw water directly from the overflow, this requires that you plumb the overflow from the tank to the skimmer directly, control the flow by a ballvalve and let the excess flow go out the other end of the T-off like this diagram, you'll get slightly better skimming and don't need to powerhead if you redo plumbing like this
