I don't see the need for it personally.

Do no freshwater dip them; they would probably die.
As for QTing them, probably not necessary. But some people will recommend you quarantine everything: fish, inverts, salt mix, lightbulbs, digital cameras...everything! ![]()

Theoretically they might transmit the ich parasite, but to all knowledge, it cannot infest them: if you don't trust the source, a) don't ever allow foreign water into your tank: use your hand; and b) make 3 separate cups of your tank water and AFTER the snails are acclimated [dripped until tank water = bag water], triple dip the snails in each cup in succession to wash them off before adding them to your tank. Then toss the washwater.

I've never quarantine or aclimated a snail or crab in my life and never had a problem.
I might start to quarantine my light and digital camera though, good one.

I now quarantine everything. Snails or shrimp get 2 weeks in the QT. Any corals get at least 2 weeks with 3 dips- 1 on arrival, 1 before going to the DT and 1 half way in between. The snails and shrimp (I haven't added any crabs but they would get the same) just get the time in QT for observation and to allow anything temporarily living on their shells to leave (such as ick). With the shrimp, once they molt I figure they are safe. Overkill? Possibly, but since I have a QT set up for corals (separate from my fish QT) it isn't hard to qt the other inverts.

If your display is well established, I would QT for 2 weeks. It's good habit regardless, but I certainly understand not QT'ing them as I have put them directly into the DT before.
One reason I have found to QT them is it tends to weed out any sick inversts. Especially cheap snails where there tends to be a higher mortality.
