Hair Algae!?

What causes hair algae and is there anyway to get rid of it besides clean up crew or pulling out all the rock and scrubbing the hell out of it?

Try to find the reason that it is there in the first place. Too much nutrients? Tap water? No skimmer? Bad/old bulbs? You'll always have some, so you should have some sort of clean-up crew.

Its there from the tank cycling. 90% of the rock was dry base rock, a skimmer ran on it through the entire cycle. The water is RODI water that was 1 ppm. Nitrates are at 10 right now. The 3 250w halides are all brand new. The cleanup crew that is in the tank right now is really small, I am waiting on our order that will be here thursday but for now I am trying to keep this hair algae under control.

All new tanks have algae problems. Other than a clean-up crew, don't know. Could use a couple of freshwater black mollies (acclimated to SW) - they would decimate that algae in no time. Could then return to LFS for credit

we have a yellow tang in there right now and he eats some of it but he doesn't seem to eat much.

My tank is going on 2 yrs old and still get pop ups of HA every once in a while. I have a little now. I'm going the black molly route.

When I had a hair algae problem I tried the following:

Cut back on my feeding to every 2-3 days.
Cut back my lights from 12 hours to 10 hours.

My clean up crew helped a little but not much.

I aquired the tank used with the problem so I did a 20% water change every week.

These were all things recommended to me that seemed to take care of the problem...
