Porcupine Puffer
Anyone know why these are considered not reef friendly? Is it because they eat corals or because they eat snails and such?
I have a green spotted puffer that is supposed to be not reef safe, but for a few snails he's fine, never bothered anything. Any opinions? Thanks. |

From my experience with my dad.......its one of those "Reef friendly but not to reef friendly fish" fish, if that makes sense.....they'll eat pretty much any fish it can get a hold of....... but I dont think they will actually pick on corals.....

I think it's basically because they will eat most inverts but I could be leaving something out.

Anyone else have an idea? I'd love to have one, just want to be sure that the snails are all I really have to worry about.

I have a porcupine puffer in my 125 reef. He never touches my corals or cleaner shrimp. The cleaner shrimp often steal food directly from his mouth, but he doesn't attack them. He sometimes tries to eat hermit crabs, but he can't crack their shells.
I used to have hundreds of tiny snails that would come out at night, but they disappeared soon after I got my puffer. That's the only damage that he's done. |
