How to use Frag Glue?

Do you just tear off a chunk and start needing it with your fingers until it becomes maleable and then stick it on the bottom of the frag and then stick that on the rock? Can you take the frag out of the tank and stick the glue on the base and then put it back in the tank and attach it to the rock you want or should you do the whole thing in the tank?

you can take the frag out of the water, but not for along time, make sure you are prepared to glue when you take it out...you dont have a lot of "playing around" time once the coral is out of the water!

Whacha gluein?

For SPS I use superglue gel... Dry the rock, dry the base of the coral... Add glue and hold for a couple minutes, then dunk it in the water... Hold a few more minutes and then set it in the tank... I've never used the two part epoxy... The superglue gel works well. I also did my frogspawn this way... All my softies I used the needle and thread method.

I'm gluing a frogspawn frag. Would superglue gel work?

Yup... The first time will drive you nuts I'm sure, it did me... But after you get the hang of holding it and knowing when to dunk it in the water and then holding it a few more minutes, you'll have the process down

How about glueing underwater...would that work? Would epoxy work better for this? Basically I want to be able to glue the frag with as little fuss as possible.

I've heard of gluing underwater, but never tried it. I know some coral dealers are refusing to warranty epoxy'd corals... the manner I mentioned is pretty easy...

From reefermadness: "NEW POLICY as of 1/13/06- Frags will no longer be guaranteed if two-part Puddy is used. Only use Super Glue GEL for securing frags. Puddy gets very hot, often over 100 degrees. This will kill frags, and kill them fast. Please see our Acclimation Procedure for new info on how to secure Frags with Super Glue GEL. "

Super glue doesn't work underwater. It sets too fast and clogs the tip. You can use epoxy underwater, but it doesn't always hold. Works much better if you can blot the area dry first.

Thanks for the info! I wonder why they say the epoxy is safe for glueing coral frags if it gets so hot...hot enough to kill the frags? That being said my friend has used it for frags in his tank to no ill effect on his corals....hmmm, which should i use?

You can use superglue gel under water. I do it all the time. Just put a nice glob of glue on the frag. Then stick it immediately in water to rock where you want it. The outside of the glue will get a film on it so you have to move it a little to break film so that the glue inside touches rock. Takes a little practice and you will no doubt get glue on fingers but it works.
