how much salt per gallon for hypo?

i have a qt tank in hypo and want to make a large batch of hypo water for waterchanges. Is their any guideline or formula to figure out how much salt per gallon i should add? Im going to start by making 5 gallons.

You do know that you cant simply add a fish to a hypo tank. It should take a couple days of gradual salinity reduction before the tank is in the 1.009 range.

You also dont have to wait 3 days between testing. Take your 5 gallons add some salt and mix well. After 5 minutes check and adjust as needed. Shouldn't take more than 15-20 mins total.

I have found for myself, Using IO, it takes me about 24 oz. per 5 gals to get a .025 sg. You still want to figure your own mix though.

Yea i know. I have a hypo qt already set up that i dropped down to hypo over a 5 day period by doing fresh water changes. It's now at hypo level and i still want to do water changes so i want to mix a big batch of hypo water so every waterchange will be the same. I know i don't have to waut 3 days i was just making a point that it would take forever to add some, wait, add some, wait. especially if someone already has the answer.

Even if someone tells you to simply add 3/4 cup of salt per gallon the only way to be sure is to test. The big problem with hypo is keeping a constant PH. Low salinity water tends to also have low PH.

How big is your qt? As long as the ammonia is in check, you shouldn't need to do too many W/C.

Yes i know i have to test. I do plan on testing. im trying to find someone who can give me a ball park estimate or somewhere to start so im not going in blind. Im sure i can just add some salt and test and all but isn't this forum made to share info? If someone already has figured out how much salt it takes what would it hurt to try their recipie and go with a starting point? im aware of the ph problem. Im not saying i know everything about it but i have done allot of reading on hypo treatment and im pretty sure i know what im doing. All im trying to find out is if anyone has figured out how much salt per gallon it takes to make hypo water. my qt tank is 20 gallons

I'm running hypo right now too. Use one cup of instant ocean salt per 5 gallon bucket and you will be right about 1.009. I asked the same question and didn't get an answer last week!

I have never taken more than a few hours to bring the salinity down.
I take a week or more to bring it back up after a successful full treatment

I agree. Not much of a problem to lower salinity quickly. You must be much more careful raising it again! I was lowering it .04 at a time with my water changes.

Take the time to figure it out once, and keep track of how much salt it took for you! *wink*

I think you'd be about 2 to 2 1/2 cups tho...

virginiadiver69: My info is pretty old i actually work as a district manager for frito lay now but i was bartending at Republic. It's pretty new so im not sure if you have heard of it but it is where the howling wolf used to be on south peters next to the red eye. Howling wolf moved down the street and we took over the spot.
It is similar to how 360 used to be (on top of the world trade center) i worked with allot of people who used to work their. 360 was damaged pretty bad by katrina and never re opened. I used to work their from time to time also.

Steven Pro and others mention that you can just plop a fish right into 1.009. A fish disease guru he has communicated with thinks the rapid drop (instant plunge to 1.009) is part of what makes hypo work, and may be the reason some don't experience success with the method. I've done it several times with no noticed ill effects (short or long term). Just make sure the pH and temp match from the water the fish is already in, and the hypo water. You can bring the salinity down slowly if you wish, but it isn't necessary.
