new sand, old tank?

My sand looks full of detrius and snail shells and pieces of dead coral.Anyway I want to add new sand.Do I have to syphon out the existing sand or just lay new sand over?Will this hurt my corals in any way.What to do?

i don't see the harm. It'll turn live like the rest of it anyway.

i would add it a little at a time...so you don't bombard your system
