Euthanizing animals...
well really its a snail,,, but i wanted some opinions...
Just in case anyone hasnt read one of my peppermint posts: my peppermint shrimp is the devil, he will eat anything and everything he can get his hands on. last night, it was one of those $3 mexican turbos... i chased him off but apparently the damage had been done.. i havent seen the snail move since then and when i took him out of the water he smelled a little bit more than i would have liked a living healthy snail to smell... so now the question is, did i do the right thing by putting him in my freezer to euthanize him (if he wasnt dead already)? in ~50 gallons of water volume one of those big guys can do a number on my parameters and i would have hated to lose more because of the snails death. It wouldnt **** me off half as bad if he had actually eaten the whole thing, but apparently he just wanted a taste - which is what he does with most of the things he eats... ive said it before and ill say it again.... if my fiance didnt like that damn shrimp so much, id ...... oooooooooooohhhhh

If it smelled that strongly, chances are Real good its already dead. But I do agree that freezing is one of the better euthanization options for tank inhabitants
"Euthanizing animals... well really its a snail,,, but i wanted some opinions..." Snails count as animals.. lol

Chances are the snail died before the shrimp go ahold of it.

I have not had to euthanize any saltwater fish as of yet. But when I have to do it to my freshies I will put them in a large bowl filled with Ice water and ice cubes. It seem to kill them between 30 seconds and a minute.

Peter... i can GUARANTEE he has killed my snails before... its like he knows exactly where to pick at them... so odds are that this is just another notch on his shrimpy belt...

clove oil is another nice way to euthanize fish. Not fun any way you slice it but sometimes there is no way around it.
