Question Phosban Reactor - Need Help

I have my phosban reactor ready to roll on my 55, except I was wondering how much carbon, rowa phos, phos ban or chemipure to put in. Also can I mix and match these in the reactor? Also how long should it stay running in the reactor, without a change out?

Id run carbon about 1/2 full...I ran a phosban reactor with phosban in it for about 3 months.....it contains alot of iron and can cause issues....what is the problem in the tank??? If you want to clear the water run carbon...If you want to get rid of algae do a wc!

I run two reactors. One with carbon and one with phosban. 150G (one container) of phosban is plenty. I run my carbon about 1/3d full. You can mix them, but the problem is, carbon is good for no more than 1 month and phosban is good for 3-4 months. So you would be wasting a lot of phosban. You could mix something like 3 parts of carbon to 1 part of phosban and get away with it.

You can mix carbon and Phosban but be sure to pre-rinse the carbon well to avoid releasing fines into the reactor. In general you use 1 gram of Phosban per gallon of tank size. It is supposed to last about 3 months but only testing will give you a clear picture as tanks differ in stocking levels and feeding regiments.

Thanks all. WK always nice to hear from you! Should you run rowa phos by itself or can it be mixed with carbon? Also what's the life of rowa in the reactor.

Brent,

Both Phosban and Rowaphos are iron based (GFO) phosphate removal products and work pretty much the same. Both use around 1 gram per gallon and last in the neighborhood of two to three months. As slider points out the problem with a mix is that the carbon has a shorter use cycle. Bacteria quickly cover the granules and block the pore structure. That give it a very limited life. I've always change out carbon every two weeks but I recycle it a few times by putting it in a pressure cooker and steaming it, under pressure, for about a half hour. I can reuse it about 3 or 4 cycles in that fashion. See GFO by Randy for a fuller picture.
