Fish jumped through eggcrate...any other suggestions?

I have eggcrate on top of my tank to hopefully keep my fish in. Well, one of my fish took a leap of faith and made it through.

I want to replace it with something that has smaller openings. i was thinking something like those gutter guards but obviously not metal.

Any suggestions?

You're not alone I've had 3 fish jump through the eggcrate in the last year.. finally just took it off and don't buy fish that jump anymore...

although one that jumped was a spotted mandarin.....

make an eggcrate frame and attach bird netting to it. your lights can still go threw and its too small for fish to jump threw.

what is bird netting? where did you buy it? would it be flammable under intense HID lights?

i think you can get it at like home depot or lowes in the garden center. its a net like thing that you put on trees and bushes to keep birds out

Maybe try another piece of eggcrate, just offset it from the original piece. That would reduce the hole size to 1/4 what it was with just a single piece of eggcrate.

Go to a tackle shop and get a casting net. Ask for a casting net for small bait fish with the smallest opening. Stretch that on a frame of eggcrate with plastic ties.
