Can I Just Remove Patches of Black Algae on Sand?

I have a couple of areas on my sand bed that have developed
a thick black algae (only a couple of silver dollar sized spots)
Is there any danger in just "scooping" it out?

I will adjust flow in these areas, but just want to nip in the
bud.
