Deal of a Lifetime

I just got back from picking up a tank....

60 Gallon Acrylic Saltwater Aquarium
Stand an Canopy
60 lbs. of Live Rock
70 lbs. of Live Sand
Sump Setup w/ Bioballs
4 Heaters
5 Powerheads
2 Hanging Filters
3 Air Pumps
Aquaglo Flourescent Light
Timer
2 Large and 1 Small canister filters
UV Sterilizer
Ballast for Compact Flourescents
Master Test Kit
2 Power Strips
Water Jugs, Buckets, Siphon, Tubing, Gravel Vac, Books, Fish Food
An various other things

How much you ask??? $125!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA I'M THE LUCKIEST PERSON ALIVE!!!!!!

I got it all set up, just have a few problems/issues.

I set up the Trickle System and flooded my kitchen. It seems that the pump is pumping the water out faster than it's coming in. And when I turn the pump off, the outtake tube acts as a siphon and that is what flooded my kitchen. So my question I guess is how do I remedy this. the intake has a ball valve that's marked how much it needs to be opened, the outtake also does but adjusting it doesn't do anything, it is submerged underwater in the tank however, I'm thinking this is maybe the problem. The pump is a Rio 1400, is it to strong?

Also we have the Aquaglo light running on the tank but that's for fish only correct? We have a ballast for compact flourescents, what type of lighting should we get?

How long was the tank set up? If the sand is "old" it will most likely have a lot of nutrients built up and will leach back into your tank. May want to get new sand. Don't use the canister filters unless you are running carbon or phosphate remover. The bioballs will become a continuing source of nitrates so unless you are only planning a FOWLR get rid of them. As far as flooding, make sure that there is a siphon bread at the water line on the return in to the tank. That way if the pump stops, water will only drain a little back in to the sump and then stop, thus averting a flood. Good luck. Pictures are always appreciated! Still sounds like a GREAT buy!!

It does sound good and Lord knows what you will do with all those accessories. It sounds like you are running without any weir boxes. These are hang on boxes that allow water to overflow the box where a siphon then carries the water back to the sump. In your case it sounds like the siphon tube just enters the tank without the weir box. I would order some weir boxes.

However, fixing the problem is pretty simple awaiting the order. Add another siphon tube or get a larger one at the LFS. They are even available at Wally Worlds pet centers. That will increase the rate the water flows into the sump. Before you start it drill a couple of small holes in the tank side of the siphon about 2" down. If the tank level drops that low the holes allow air to enter and stop the siphon.

Did your "purchase" involve a gun and a ski mask?

HAHA no my purchase involved a little rich boy who had no concept of money. He said there's the stuff, call me if you need any help and took off. We could have walked out with computers, TV, personal stuff. Ridiculous. His roommates even understood what a mistake he was making. they were like " why are you selling ALL that stuff so cheap???" we took it an bounced.
