Wet Dry filter question

I have a 30 gallon wet dry filter that is used on my 125rr tank and it looks to be have excessive build up a brown looking substance power sitting in the bottom of that side of the sump (under all the bio balls).
Is this something that needs to left in there or clean it out.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Sounds like Detriutis to me. Best thing to do is put the bio balls in a bucket of salt water and siphon it out. Long term it will push your nitrate up.

Fish poop. Gunk.
Siphon it out and toss it in the trash.

I agreen with Omni2226, fish poop, uneaten food etc. Best thing to do is clean it out when you do your next gravel vacume.

That might explain why I have been doing a 40 gallon water change every two weeks.
I'm sure it harbors the nitrates and keeps water quality down also.
Thanks for all the help.
