Skimmer Water Level

Where exactly do most of you keep the water level on your skimmers. I have an Aquarium Systems hang on skimmer. I currently have the water level all the way to the top of the canister. Water level sits right below the skim cup.

That is a Seaclone. Many hobbyist will tell you they don't work. I was given several of the and have gotten them all to work. (Patting myself on the back, lol)
I was only able to get them to work well in a sump. Use a maxijet 1200, keep the pump ~2" under the water. Let it run for a couple days with air valve open a couple turns. Important-it won't work at this point. After a couple days open the air until water only covers about 40% of the discharge apron. Leave it alone for a couple days and it will work.

I got mine to work right out of the box. It's all in the tiny adjustments with this skimmer. The bioball mod helps a little bit.
They are far from a quality skimmer, but for a smaller tank (55g or smaller) they'll get the job done.

for adjustments, open that air valve all the way, do not close it all the way as the instructions say to do, doesn't work well that way. Open it up, and slowly make 1/4 turns every few minutes until you get all the large bubbles out of the J-tube. Then just wait. It should start working shortly after, but it'll need constant adjustments daily to stay optimal.

Thanks guys! I do have about 1/2" thick liquid at the bottom of the collection cup. Mostly foams over then collects at the bottom. Ive also noticed some physical matter as well. Also, when I have it all the way open the canister is filled with bubbles, is this not supposed to be. Should it look as though it does when its closed. Its like a totally diff look when open. Maybe thats why I have all those microbubbles..
