I'd just add that I didn't have very much growth with that light, though I think that can be attributed to the distance over my sump having been too high.
I switched to this one which was also highly recommended in these forums and the Chaeto in my refugium took off like wild..... http://www.lightsofamerica.com/floods.htm I got it at Home Depot but I think that they're widely available...make sure if you try one, that you get one of the models with the 6500K bulb (click Specifications)

I have had great results with this bulb here. 19w 5100k par 38 TCP bulb. You have to special order it from the HomeDepots warehouse. I have seen over 100%growth rate in 3 months from my chaeto. I got it when it was the size of a tennis ball, now it is larger than a basketball.
Here is the info if anyone is interested in this bulb. IF ANYONE WANTS TO KNOW HOW TO ORDER THE TCP 19/85W BULB FOR 9.99 EASILY THEN LISTEN UP!! ok, step 1: Call the home depot supply number 1-800-431-3000 step 2: Ask for the special order department, the bulb can only be special ordered. step 3: the part # for the bulb is 99570, this is for the 19w 5100k par 38 TCP bulb, I assume the 16w is also available, but you will have to ask them to look up its part number I had to create a special order account, it was free and fast to set up, also the bulb is only special order so it can't be ordered online through the HD supply catalog. Shipping was free and it should take 6 to 10 days. This is the cheapest place I have found to order the correct 5100k bulb! |

I guess it would depend on the size of your refug. Mine is 55 gallons so I needed a slightly larger light than the ones above. I went to Lowes and baught a 70W 4000 K MH dusk to dawn light. for around $70.00. I also added two 55 or 65W ( i forgot ) 10,000 K compacts. I have to harvest algae every weekend.

You can get a pair of 26W 6500K screw in PC bulbs at Walmart for ~$6. I got a couple of reflectors in the next aisle over for $6 a piece that should focus all the light downward into the sump.
This maybe temporary - depending how well this works. I just got it, so no idea on results.

Scengineer, those sould work great. As long as color spectrum is correct, and I saw those bulbs just this last weekend, seemed to be correct. I've only been using one with my 10g and it's been just spiffy for over a year now.

I havn't seen a huge growth in my cheato yet as I am battling a small algea outbreak ( new tank about 3 months old ). But I p/u up a c.f. flood light style 25w = to 100w 6500k for $12.00 I think it was at my local electrical store. Maybe check your local store to see what they have.
After I get the outbreak under control, I will post how it seems the cheato grows w/ this light. Chris |
