My fuge has a 23w 2700K CF flood lamp ($10 at HD or Walmart) I have silver branching pulsing xenia under it and it grows great! I put some of my GSP's under them, and they lost most of there color, but the bulb has no "blues" in it, so that may have had something to do with it. IME, you can keep softies under some low lighting, just not softies with color, the algae within the coral is what needs the high lighing.

Thanks for the response. Do you have a brand name for it? I'll look at HD and see if I can find it maybe one with a higher k rating for more of a blue.

Has anyone else tried thid? How did it work for you and what kind of bulb did you use?

On the bulb it says "N:vision" Id guess thats the company name.

the nice thing about compact flourcent is they run cool, and the nice thing about the flood lamp, is that its water proof (the bulb at least, not the housing, but the bulb is closer to the water)
Not the prettyiest bulbs, but 2 in a diy canopy would only run about $40 for the whole setup.

You didn't ask for looks, just "cheap"

Thanks. Yea I'm not worried about looks it going in a DIY canopy. I just finished the stand the holes drilled the sump is ready. Now I just got to get the lights. I'm looking for as cheap as posable, so I'll go check out Walmart and HD and see what I can find. Just wanted to know if it would work. Thanks again.
