Palythoa grandis

Is this about accurate for this species or is this really high?
Palythoa grandis
I have some of these in my tank and was just wondering if they are really this valuable.

Prices for those things are all over the map. That price is in line, albeit on the high end. Then again, Ive had people offer to just cut some out of their colony and give it to me for free, just because they thought it was ugly... lol. I love the stuff though.

That site says "Size: 3-3/4"

That must be a typo, right? They aren't 3.75" long, are they?!?

I think they include the rock. That seems kinda high for those.

That has to be the whole rock; Ive seen individuals push 2" across, but I think thats pretty extreme.

it may be a different color morph too.

those marble ones are worth $10 a polyp from what I've seen (and paid) around here.

anyone know if there is a better way to frag, I have cut the heads off and they both grow into new polyps (head and stalk)

I don't believe Zoa/Palys can be fragged that way! It may even be dangerous.

You must let them spread on their own.

Don't cut them in half. Frag these like Zoanthids. My preferred method is to let them grow out, and then take a dremel tool or hammer and chisel and break a chunk of rock off with some on it.

I had these in my aquarium. I purchased three small colonies and on there own, they split up into 2 large colonies and 3 small colonies. I had them burried in a rubble bed so as they spread, they were attaching to individual rocks.

They apparently will spread on there own so you should not have to cut anything, just break the rock between the polyps with good old hammer and chisel.

I don't remember what I paid for them but it was not much.

Chris

This is where I got mine originally about a year ago.

Any particular reason not to cut them... assuming I protect myself from toxins. I have fragged them at least twice now by cutting the head off, and the head attached to a new rock and the base regrew a new head.

If those are as big as they say they are, the price may be in line. They come from the Caribbean, so the LF stores here always have them. I have not seen any in the wild or in the LFS that big in the few years I've been collecting zoos.
