Question Which Protein Skimmer?

I have a 30 gallon tank that I'm just getting started. I'm trying to find out what would be the best protein skimmer I can use that hangs off the back of the tank. I'm kind of limited on space because I have a hood that I'm using. If you have any opinions or option please let me know.

I like the CPR Bak Pak, just need to keep the airtubing clean so the venturi works, but this should be regular maintenance anyway.

an AquaC Remora would be a nice fit on that sized tank. It may take a week or so to break the unit in, and then another couple of days to dial in the foam height, but after that it's pretty much easy maintenance. and they're construction is impressively solid.

I, personally, think that the Typhoon is garbage, though it is cheap (but you often get what you pay for).

siveley,
why do you think the typhoon is garbage? It out performs all remoras that I have ever seen. Did you ever own one? Did it not work well for you? Before calling something garbage give some reasons, otherwise it is just anecdotal evidence.

I have had both the remora and the typhoon and the typhoon kicks the crap out of the remora in every instance that I have seen. Anthony Calfo seems to like the remora, is that what you are refering to? That post was in 2005....the typhoon was not even out then.

I would not buy the mc300.

Total ripoff for what you get.

People hate them, do a search.

One can make the same thing for a fraction of the cost.

Hahn has made similar skimmers for years at n-r.com

Just my opinion, if you've got it, and it works for you, more power to you.

I still cannot recommend it for the price.

Paying 500 dollars for a skimmer for a 30 gallon tank is just silly sorry..

For that small of a tank with no sump just do weekly water changes.. Will work as good if not better then most small skimmers. Not to mention you dont have to look at a ugly skimmer hanging on the back of your tank.. Or even better drill it and add a sump then you have Tons of options for good skimmers at decent prices..

BTW FWIW how much your skimmer pulls out in a said amount of time doesn't really help alot.. I've got good skimmers and they only need dumped every other week or so.. Not cause my skimmers aren't working just cause my water is clean...If I feed heavy for a few days I might have to dump them twice in a week.

There are only about a million things that can and will effect skimmer performance. I had a Remora Pro,it worked OK not great but OK. I had a CSS 220 never worked ever total piece of crap. These are the only HOB skimmers I have owned (I dont really consider a SEACLOWN a skimmer). I am setting up a 29 gallon reef in a month or so. The skimmer that I use will not be either of the ones I mentioned. I am looking at an AE 55 or an RO NW 110.
