koralia 4

hello guys

just got 2 hydor koralia 4 pumps for my tank, i was really excited because all i had for water movement was a POS powersweep, anyways i proceded to install one of them, first the freaking pump is enormous, second i turn that thing on and it created a sandstorm in there, my fishes werent happy at all, anyways these pumps give me 1200 gph movement and i have 46 gal tank, in your best opinion what pump can i get to create very good movement i n there without causing a sandstorm, p.s. i will keep pumps because probably i will be going to a 150 gal in about 6 months.

i have read about rio, penguin, mj, but cant decide, BTW the tank is a bowfront (dont know if that matters)
thanks

sana

Try using 1, you can point it anywhere in the tank and that might be enough!!!

The #4 is too much for a tank that size. The #2 would be a good fit.

2 koralia 4's should be fine in there. mount them about halfway down and point them at each other and up some and you should be fine. That is how mine are aimed.

Yes I only have one, plus my return flow at about 400-500gph. You could probably put 2 #2's. My softies don't really like a lot of flow so I haven't needed to add another.I also didn't want to add any more heat.I have a skimmer,UV sterilizer, koralia, and return pump all heating up my 46.I don't want to buy a chiller.I have to alternate from skimmer to UV as it is.

I have 2 Maxi 1200's and a 900 and was actually looking at two #2's in my 46 Bow. Does anyone have a pic. If I can reduce clutter, I am all for that. Just didn't think they would be small enough. Much appreiciated

I have 1300 gph in my 20g high with the return and 2 maxis and a #1 korilla, its a softie tank, I have a sand bottom as well. Flow all depends whats in the tank and how it is setup, i get away with all that flow beause my live rock is stacked to the surface of the water and it breaks up the flow ALOT. Now if i had just a little live rock in the tank with those pumps i would most certainly have a sandstorm and be blowing flesh off corals.

Any chance of a full tank shot of your setup?

Here is a picture of a #4 and #1 in my 36x18x24 tank. You can see how much surface turbulence the #4 produces, as well as the large dip in the substrate.

I got the 4 from Drs. Foster and Smith and they let me return it for a different one because it was too powerful.

If I were you I'd go for the 3. I got the 4 for my 36g tank and it was way to much. My corals closed up instantly and barely came out at all by the end of the next day. I decided to take it out and get the 2 and now I'm kind of wishing I got the 3 instead. Unfortunetly, no one local carries them or I would of tried the 3 next, but I wasn't going to push my luck returning the pump for a second time.

i was going to get a KORALIA 2, raibaru do you think is to low of a flow for my 46 gal bowfront, or just go for the 3 and point it at the rocks, i got some softies in there and im worried about the turbulence that thats going to produce, any more input greatly appreciated.

I'd give the 3 a shot personally. I haven't seen it in action first hand, but I kinda wish I got the 3 instead of the 2. And your tank is 6" larger then mine.

ok i will try it, btw i got 2 of the koralia 4 fron dr foster, and tought that it will creat some great flow, but when i installed one of them omg a sandstorm no matter where i pointed it, anyways im going to keep both 4 since i will probably go with a much bigger tank (if the wife approves my master plans) and order a 3 right now and i will let you know how it goes, thanks everybody for input.

Good luck. I hope to set up a 65g tank this summer if everything goes well here. However, I plan to get a reef-ready system and have all the flow from the returns or a closed loop type system so I have no equipment in the display.
