Algae Question!!
I noticed today that all the rocks I purchased that were in another members sump have color now. THey are almost a rust color and some covered in bubbles. Also the back of the sand and the corners(i assume where there isnt much flow) is getting green algae on it. WHat do I do?? Should I worry about the bubbles??

75 gallon. Just finished the cycle. I have a goby, cleaner shrimp, and pair of clowns. I have only fed them once in this tank as I just put them in yesterday. I have 2 Koralia 3's, 2" LS bed, 90 lbs of LR. I have a sump underneath with a small return pump(I use the area of the pump as a fuge so I only have a mag2 with 4ft rise)

Sounds like the normal diatoms and green hair algae that all new tanks go through. Not to worry, it will go away on its own. The bubbles in the brown algae is a little suspect though. Could be dinoflagellates which are much harder to get rid of. Can you get a pic of the algaes? Hard to ID dinos without a pic.

If this is new rock then lowering time of light helps, but algea grwoth is always normal and with some algea eating fish and crabs they can help control. Also flow ( not knowing your system ) often helps , try not to have closed in spaces leave holes so water can flow through. Good cross flow helps.

For a cleanup crew I personally like nassarius for the sandbed and astrea/turbos for the glass. Turbos in particular make quick work of hair algae. I would start with the cleaup crew, give it some time and it should improve. Your tank is new so I wouldn't stress too much, all is normal. Also, the use of RO/DI water is important for beating any algae issues.

I had dinos and trust me...YOU DON"T WANT THEM!!!! I'll take GHA any day. If you do have dinos, do a search and look for my post. I got rid of them naturally in four days.
