I.d.

ok, so i got some free coral from someone who was taking down there reef. The tank was decently maintained but i believe this person was greatly missinfromed. They told me that the first of these three was tree coral, and from looking at other pics, i dont believe it is. i am hoping i can get a little help.

Thanks,
Jon

All pretty easy corals that most start with. On 3 do they open adn close, like they are pulsing or do they retract at night? It could be Pink Star Polyps hard for me to see the base.

Looks like Anthelia in the 3rd pic to me. The other two ID's are correct, kenya tree and zoas. Nice healthy looking specimens there, jong.

#2 looks like a palythoa, agree with star polyps

1) Kenya Tree (Capnella sp.)
2) Button Polyps (Protopalythoa sp.)
3) A stressed/unhealthy Pom Pom Xenia (Xenia umbellata)

#3 can't be any sort of Xeniid, because each polyp, if you look closely, has a calyx beneath it (sort of a "tube"). That means that it must be some sort of stoloniferan related to clove polyps. #2 is a zoanthid of some sort or another.
#1 is a Neptheid--too difficult to narrow down to one genus or another without more details.

For #1, you can aggrevate it and cause it to close up. If you feel the surface of the coral and it is rough, than it is a Capnella. If it is smooth, then it is Nepthea. This is because the Capnella has more exposed spicules.

For #3, I really don't see calyx, sorry. On the other hand, I've seen various Xennidae in degrading health that look identical to this.

I have encircled one of the calyces. I have looked at so many clove polyp specimens, it has become second nature picking them out by looking for calyces.

The only Xeniid it could remotely be would be some species of Anthelia. All Xenia spp. have discrete stalks that multiple polyps arise from.

I agree that #3 is NOT xenia. Looks more like anthellia.
