leaving fan on overnight
I currently have a clip on fan over my tank due to some high temp. today here in NY. What's your thought on leaving it on throughout the night? I have heard that fans can suck the oxygen out of the area around. Should I only turn it on during the day?

If the fan causes surface agitation, it may help increase oxygen.

I have also seen the fans that run 24-7 can drop the temp in the middle of the night so be carefull.

Definitely no problems leaving the fan on as long as needed. Just like one person said, at night when it gets cooler, tank temp might drop really low so be careful. Perhaps at night, open up your windows and have your fan on till like midnight or so.

The ideal solution would be to place the fans on the second stage of a temperture controller. YOU ARE using a temperature controller for you heater aren't you? If not, you should be

5 fans in the canopy come on with timers just before lights and go off just after.
1 fan in sump runs 24/7 blowing down directly at water surface. Heater in sump. I set the heater using the warmest temp the tank reaches during the last part of the light cycle in which all lights are on. This way at night when the tank starts to cool the heater will keep the temp from falling too much. My house a/c is set at 78 at night and 80 during the day. The tank never gets above 78.

First time I've heard that a fan can suck oxygen away from the water surface. Actually the fan redistributes air which is already inside the tank room plus it helps with dissipitation of carbon dioxide. Another reason to open a window to oxygenate the room.
