First can you tell us more about your system. Size of tank, how old, filtration, flow, lighting, etc... Second, please list all of your current water params?

Green hair algae. What kind of water do you use RO/DI or tap? And please list current water params.

The tap water is an issue for sure. You are introducing nutrients from the water source. Cyano is usually red in most cases. I would bet you have a nitrate and possibly a phosphate issue. If you don't have at least 20x turnover in the display that could also be an issue.

Yes, absolutely. As cheap as RO/DI units are these days there's almost no reason not too. That way you'll introduce only pure water into your system. And it will be cheaper in the long run vs buying water. Can you get a pic of it?

Cyanobacteria can come in red, purple, black, green, blue/green... ... ... I've had them all at one time or another.

I would not add animals to solve a potential water chemistry problem. First, getting accurate test results is key. Then addressing any issues would be the next step. Let us know your levels when you get them.

Do you run a skimmer?

No problem. Get the tests done and then you'll know for sure what's going on. Also, take a sample of your tap water up there and have them test the TDS. Remember, a properly functioning RO/DI will produce 0 TDS water. The numbers don't lie.
