have a question?
hey all I am having a rather heated discustion with some people at my home town aqurium club.. well I think that I am correct but I guss you guys will determin that..
we were talkin about agrocrete, and LR alternatives,,, live lava rock or tuffa. I said that if you were to use this you should cure it sepatly from your main tank with some already establish LR. because if you put it into you estastablished tank you would cause a cycle.. they said that there was no reason for a cyle as there was nothing to die off.. whicj I agreed to but I know I heard or read some where that if you introduce alot of dead rock you could crash your tank is this true can someone explain either way to me as I do not want to be giving out wrong advise. thx in advance Pat

im no expert here but when you add "dead" LR to an established system, most likely there will be die off. wich as everyone knows cause ammonia and all that bad stuff..I would prob cure it in a seperate space to just be sure, and seed it with some LR from the main tank. If its not that much rock it should be an easy process. HTH

1) any inert baserock adds a big zero to anything chemistrywise in your tank. this includes aragarocrete, cinderblocks, tuffa, lava, etc etc etc
2) certain cement products release calcium hydroxide(?but is this a bad thing? ) while they "cure" (as in finish their chemical reaction) those you may want to soak elsewhere for a month. 3) any organic material on the inert baserock is nutrients and would help a bacteria or algae bloom. this would include uncured fresh rock (dyoff), dead LR (already dead stuff rots off when re-wet) so, depending on the situation you may want to cure or cook that stuff separately also HTH.
