Thumbs up Seaclone Protein Skimmer Owner, read this.

Hi Everyone,

I though of sharing this tid-bit : )

I have had some problems for the last few days with my Seaclone 150 protein skimmer, spilling tons of micro bubbles into my tank after my scheduled water change, while searched for a solution, one came fast enough once I read the manual in PDF format on the Marineland site.

http://www.marineland.com/products/c...con_sclone.asp

I quote :

“ If SeaClone is spilling large amounts of fine bubbles into tank and / or Collection Cup is filling with water ... “

- This condition can occur when a “ slime producing “ additive e.g. NOVAQUA STRESS COAT, has been recently added to the water.
Often used for their dechlorination or ammonia neutralizing capabilities, these additives contain thick gel-like agent that can cause excess foaming.

Close air intake system for at least one day ( some brands require as much as 3 weeks ), depending on amount used ), the slime producing agent will eventually break down and skimming action will return to normal.
NOTE : Protein skimmers remove organic compounds dissolved in water, any organic base additive, particularly those that claim to thicken a fish’s slime coating, may affect skimmer and production for a brief period.

Hope you guys read this, be aware of this issue if you are faced with the same problem as I have had.
BTW, I use AquaPlus from Nutrafin, and my skimmer is starting back again this evening after 2 full days of acting strange.

Cheers,
Denis

My 2 cents spend the money on a better skimmer. I had a seaclone and it never skimmed enough. Spend the extra money it is worth it in the long run

Yeah Stress Coat will do this to any skimmer, my pet store used it when they couldn't find the Prime and their Remora skimmer overflowed everytime you turned it on for about a week! I don't know how much they added to get that reaction.

So you say Pime does not cause that reaction ?
If so, I need to switch.

My present 50 Gal. is my first reef tank, it was set up in order for me to learn the basics, and the IN's and Out's of this past time, while not going all out and spending the big dollars.
I must admit that I have spend quite a few dollars as it is lol

That being said.
I have already lined up my next reef tank project : )

I am building it in increments over the course of the next six months, a 86 Gal. ( 48" x 18" x 24 " ), drilled tank, with sump / refugium ( maybe a closed loop system to increase circulation as well ), for lighting, I’m going with a Teck 6 x T5 tube ( no MH for me ), and buying a Euro-Reef protein skimmer.

After seeing a lot of skimmer in operation at different locations, I have opted for the Euro-Reef, it works way better than all the others I have seen.

Cheers,
Denis

PS : I though I was in knee deep when I started in fresh water many years back lol
With saltwarer, I need a wet suit becuase I'm in right over my head, and loving it : )
